Tradition. When you have a program with a storied tradition and your team is presently and consistently winning over ranked opponents and you are winning division titles, when you talk about the past and revel in it, you are tying the past to current and displaying a cohesive storyline of of history continuing into the present.
When you have a program with a storied tradition and history but are currently fighting to stay relevant on the landscape of the sport - and you STILL keep talking about your history and referring to it as if it matters, you are Uncle Rico throwing footballs at a video camera.

Nebraska Football ~ Completely irrelevant since 2001.
